Sonam Wangchuk: The Engineer and Education Reformer Reshaping Ladakh

Introduction

Sonam Wangchuk is an Indian engineer, innovator, and education reformist. He is the founder-director of the Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), which was founded in 1988 by a group of students who had been, in his own words, "victims" of an alien education system foisted on Ladakh.

Engineering Innovations

Wangchuk is best known for designing the SECMOL campus, which runs entirely on solar energy and uses no fossil fuels for heating, lighting, or cooking.

In 2013, he invented the Ice Stupa technique, which creates artificial glaciers. These glaciers store winter water that would otherwise go to waste, releasing it slowly during the spring planting season when farmers need it most. This invention has helped fight water scarcity in the high-altitude desert of Ladakh.

Educational Reform

In 1994, Wangchuk launched Operation New Hope, a collaboration of government, village communities, and NGOs to reform the public school system in Ladakh. SECMOL's campus itself is an innovative school where students who failed in the traditional system learn practical skills, environmental consciousness, and leadership.

Environmental Activism

In recent years, Sonam Wangchuk has been at the forefront of climate advocacy. He has undergone several climate fasts (hunger strikes) to draw attention to the ecological fragility of the Himalayan glaciers and to demand protection for Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which would allow local communities to manage their land and resources sustainably.
