Fascinatingly, for Muslims, this bizarre quantum reality is not entirely unfamiliar. It echoes a fundamental theological concept that lies at the very heart of Islam: Al-Ghayb (The Unseen).
What is Al-Ghayb?
In Islamic theology, reality is divided into two realms:
- 'Alam al-Shahadah: The visible, observable world that we interact with using our physical senses.
- 'Alam al-Ghayb: The unseen, hidden realm that exists beyond human perception. This includes Allah (SWT), the angels, the soul (Ruh), Heaven, Hell, and the divine decree (Qadar).
Belief in Al-Ghayb is the absolute prerequisite for faith. In the opening verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah describes the righteous believers as:
"Those who believe in the unseen (Al-Ghayb), establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them." (Quran 2:3)
For a long time, atheistic materialists argued that if something cannot be seen, measured, or touched, it does not exist. Classical Newtonian physics supported this view, painting the universe as a giant, predictable, mechanical clock. But then, Quantum Mechanics shattered that illusion.
The Quantum Realm: Science Discovers the Unseen
At the subatomic level—the realm of quarks, electrons, and photons—the predictable laws of classical physics completely collapse. Quantum mechanics has introduced concepts that force scientists to accept that the "observable" world is only a tiny fraction of reality.

1. Dark Matter and Hidden Dimensions
Astrophysicists now know that all the visible matter in the universe—every star, planet, and galaxy—makes up only about 5% of the cosmos. The remaining 95% is made of "Dark Matter" and "Dark Energy." We cannot see it, touch it, or interact with it, but we know it is there because of its gravitational pull. Furthermore, String Theory suggests the universe operates in up to 11 hidden dimensions.
Modern physics has mathematically proven that there is a vast, unseen reality operating parallel to our own. For a Muslim, the scientific realization that human senses are profoundly limited is a direct reflection of our belief in Al-Ghayb. We share physical space with angels and Jinn, occupying dimensions beyond our visual spectrum.
2. Quantum Entanglement and Divine Unity (Tawhid)
Quantum entanglement is a phenomenon where two particles become linked. If you change the state of one particle, the other changes instantly, even if they are light-years apart, defying the speed of light. Albert Einstein famously called this "spooky action at a distance."
This scientific discovery of profound, invisible interconnectedness mirrors the Islamic philosophical concept of Wahdat al-Wujud (the unity of existence). It points to a universe that is not a random collection of isolated objects, but a deeply connected, singular fabric sustained by a single Creator. Everything in the heavens and the earth is intimately linked in obedience to Allah.
3. The Observer Effect and Divine Decree (Qadar)
One of the most famous experiments in quantum physics is the Double Slit Experiment, which proved the "Observer Effect." It showed that subatomic particles exist in a state of probability (a wave) and only lock into a physical reality (a particle) when they are observed.
In a philosophical sense, reality is fluid until a conscious observer interacts with it. This creates a fascinating heuristic bridge to the Islamic concept of Qadar (Divine Decree). We are taught that our supplications (Dua) can actually change our destiny. The universe is not a rigid, pre-written script; it is a dynamic, responsive reality that bends to the Will of Allah and the prayers of the believer. As Allah says:
"Every day He is bringing about a matter." (Quran 55:29)
Reconciling Faith and Reason
The intersection of Islam and advanced science is not about using physics to "prove" the Quran. The Quran is a book of signs (Ayat), not a textbook of science. Science is constantly changing, while the Word of Allah is eternal.
However, studying quantum physics should deeply humble us. It dismantles the arrogance of materialism. When the world's most brilliant physicists admit that the universe is made mostly of things we cannot see or understand, it becomes much easier for the human heart to bow its head and say: "I believe in Al-Ghayb."
