How to Pray Tahajjud: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide
The Tahajjud prayer, also known as Qiyam al-Layl (standing in the night), is a voluntary prayer that holds immense spiritual weight in Islam. It is the prayer of the righteous, performed when the rest of the world is asleep.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
"The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer." (Sahih Muslim)
When is the Time for Tahajjud?
Tahajjud is performed after the Isha prayer and before the time of Fajr begins. However, there are specific conditions:
- You must have performed the obligatory Isha prayer.
- It is highly recommended (though not strictly mandatory according to some scholars) to sleep for a portion of the night and wake up specifically for this prayer.
The Best Time: The most virtuous time for Tahajjud is the last third of the night. This is the time when Allah descends to the lowest heaven and asks:
"Who is calling upon Me that I may answer him? Who is asking from Me that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness that I may forgive him?" (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Step-by-Step Guide to Performing Tahajjud
- Make the Intention (Niyyah): Before going to sleep, intend to wake up for Tahajjud. Even if you oversleep, you will be rewarded for your sincere intention.
- Wake up and Perform Wudu: Cleanse yourself spiritually and physically.
- Choose the Number of Rak'ahs: Tahajjud is prayed in sets of two (2 Rak'ahs). You can pray 2, 4, 6, 8, or more. The Prophet (pbuh) typically prayed 8 Rak'ahs of Tahajjud, followed by 3 Rak'ahs of Witr.
- Perform the Prayer: Pray as you would normally pray a 2-Rak'ah Sunnah or Nafl prayer. It is highly recommended to recite longer Surahs if you have them memorized, but reciting short Surahs like Al-Ikhlas is also perfectly valid.
- Make Abundant Dua: The time of Tahajjud is one of the most guaranteed times for your Duas to be accepted. Pour your heart out to Allah, in whatever language you speak.
The Life-Changing Benefits of Tahajjud
- Closeness to Allah: Waking up in the cold of the night solely for Allah demonstrates unparalleled love and devotion.
- Accepted Supplications: It is the ultimate "cheat code" for the believer whose heart is desperately seeking something from their Creator.
- Light on the Face: Early scholars used to say that those who pray in the night have the brightest faces during the day.
Start small. Set your alarm just 15 minutes before Fajr, pray 2 short Rak'ahs, and gradually build the habit. It will transform your life.
