Entropy, the Second Law of Thermodynamics, and Cosmic Dissolution: Quranic Eschatology and the Fate of the Universe

In classical and statistical thermodynamics, the Second Law of Thermodynamics—formulated by Rudolf Clausius and Ludwig Boltzmann—is regarded by theoretical physicists as the most unassailable, supreme physical law in the cosmos. It dictates that in any closed isolated system, Entropy ($S$)—the measure of disorder, molecular chaos, and unavailable thermal energy—must always increase over time ($\Delta S \ge 0$).

This fundamental law establishes the unidirectional Arrow of Time. It proves that the universe is not an eternal, steady-state machine that has existed infinitely into the past; it had a definitive low-entropy beginning (the Big Bang), and it is progressing toward an inevitable, mathematically certain thermodynamic death—where all stellar hydrogen is consumed, stars extinguish, atomic matter decays, and the cosmos dissolves.

When we open the Holy Quran, we discover that its vivid, catastrophic descriptions of the end of the cosmos (Yawm al-Qiyamah / The Day of Resurrection) perfectly describe the physical unraveling of cosmic equilibrium: the losing of gravitational cohesion, the burnout of stellar bodies, and the ultimate contraction and recreation of spacetime.

1. The Quranic Unraveling of Cosmic Structures

The Holy Quran describes the dissolution of the universe across several chapters with staggering cosmological imagery:

إِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ ۝ وَإِذَا النُّجُومُ انكَدَرَتْ ۝ وَإِذَا الْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ

"When the sun is folded up [extinguished], and when the stars lose their light [fall and disperse], and when the mountains are set in motion..."
(Surah At-Takwir 81:1–3)

And in Surah Al-Infitar:

إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انفَطَرَتْ ۝ وَإِذَا الْكَوَاكِبُ انتَثَرَتْ ۝ وَإِذَا الْبِحَارُ فُجِّرَتْ

2. The Physics of Stellar Extinction: Kuwwirat (Folding of the Sun)

The Arabic verb used in Surah At-Takwir to describe the fate of the Sun is Kuwwirat (كُوِّرَتْ), which literally means "wound up, folded tightly, or compacted".

Modern stellar astrophysics reveals that when a medium-sized G-type star like our Sun exhausts its core hydrogen fuel:

It will expand into a Red Giant before shedding its outer plasma envelopes into a planetary nebula.
The remaining carbon-oxygen core will collapse under intense self-gravity into a super-dense, cold White Dwarf—literally "compacting and folding in on itself" until its thermonuclear light is permanently extinguished.

3. The Cosmic Roll-Up and Re-Creation: The Big Crunch and New Spacetime

In Surah Al-Anbiya, the Quran presents a breathtaking description of the geometric reversal of cosmic spacetime:

يَوْمَ نَطْوِي السَّمَاءَ كَطَيِّ السِّجِلِّ لِلْكُتُبِ ۚ كَمَا بَدَأْنَا أَوَّلَ خَلْقٍ نُّعِيدُهُ ۚ وَعْدًا عَلَيْنَا ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا فَاعِلِينَ

"The Day when We will roll up the heaven like the rolling up of a scroll for writings. As We began the first creation, We will repeat it. [That is] a promise binding upon Us. Indeed, We will do it."

Throughout history, atheistic materialists maintained that the universe was eternal, uncreated, and static. However, the Second Law of Thermodynamics decisively demolished this claim:

If the universe had existed for an infinite amount of time into the past, maximum entropy would have already been reached an eternity ago, and all energy would have decayed into static heat death.
The fact that we have usable energy and burning stars today proves mathematically that the universe had an absolute beginning in the finite past.

And because it had a beginning, it must inevitably experience an absolute end.

5. Conclusion: Beyond the Thermodynamic Horizon

The physical laws governing our cosmos confirm that everything in existence is temporary, mortal, and destined for dissolution.

The Holy Quran summarizes this eternal reality with majestic eloquence:

كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا فَانٍ ۝ وَيَبْقَىٰ وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ

"Everyone upon it will perish, and there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor."
