The 99 Names of Allah: As-Salam (The Source of Peace)
In today’s fast-paced world, almost everyone is looking for the same thing: peace. We buy big houses, go on expensive vacations, and try to make more money, all hoping it will give us peace of mind. But true peace cannot be bought.
To find real peace, we must connect with the fifth Beautiful Name of Allah: As-Salam.
What Does As-Salam Mean?
As-Salam translates to "The Flawless," "The Source of Peace," or "The Giver of Peace."
The name comes from the Arabic root word Salama, which means to be safe, secure, and free from any danger or defect. Because Allah is As-Salam, He is completely free from any faults. More importantly, He is the only true source of peace and safety in the entire universe.
Whenever you feel a moment of deep calm in your heart, or when you feel safe in your home, that feeling of peace was placed there directly by As-Salam.
Allah uses this beautiful name in the Quran alongside His other majestic names:
"He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection of Peace (As-Salam)..." (Quran 59:23)
The Connection Between Islam and As-Salam
It is no coincidence that the name of the religion, Islam, and the standard Muslim greeting, Assalamu Alaikum (Peace be upon you), both come from the exact same root word as As-Salam.
When Muslims greet each other, they are not just saying "hello." They are making a beautiful prayer for each other, saying, "May the peace and safety of As-Salam be upon you." Furthermore, Allah promises that for those who do good deeds and follow His path, their final home will be Dar as-Salam (The Home of Peace) in Paradise, where there is no sadness, pain, or fear.
How Can We Use This Name in Our Lives?
If you are dealing with stress, anxiety, or a heavy heart, connecting with As-Salam is the ultimate cure. Here is how you can use this name in your daily life:
1. Ask for Peace After Prayer
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us a very specific and beautiful habit. Immediately after finishing his daily prayers, he would say:
"Allahumma antas-Salam, wa minkas-Salam, tabarakta ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram." (O Allah, You are Peace, and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Owner of Majesty and Honor.)
If your mind is racing with worries about school, work, or your family, sit quietly after your prayer and ask As-Salam to pour peace into your heart. Because He owns peace, He can easily give it to you.
2. Be a Peacemaker
If you love As-Salam, you should try to spread peace in your own life. Do not be a person who starts arguments, spreads rumors, or creates drama. Instead, be the person who calms people down, who forgives easily, and who brings family members together.
When you make your home and your community a peaceful place, you are acting as a true servant of As-Salam.
