The 99 Names of Allah: Ar-Rahman (The Entirely Merciful)

In Islam, getting closer to God begins with understanding who He truly is. The best way to know Allah is by learning His 99 Beautiful Names (Asma-ul-Husna).

Every time we open the Quran, we start by saying Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim (In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful).

Today, we are looking at the very first and most famous name: Ar-Rahman.

What Does Ar-Rahman Mean?

Ar-Rahman translates to "The Entirely Merciful" or "The Most Compassionate."

This name comes from the Arabic root word Rahmah, which means mercy, pity, and deep love. It is the same root word used for a mother’s womb (Rahm). Just like a mother’s womb completely surrounds, protects, and feeds a growing baby, the mercy of Ar-Rahman completely surrounds and protects the entire universe.

Allah says in the Quran:

"My Mercy encompasses all things." (Quran 7:156)

A Mercy for Everyone

The name Ar-Rahman is very special because it describes a mercy that is given to absolutely everyone and everything.

Allah's mercy as Ar-Rahman is not just for Muslims or for people who pray. It is for every human being on Earth, whether they are good or bad, rich or poor, believers or non-believers. It is also for the animals, the oceans, and the trees.

Because Allah is Ar-Rahman, He gives everyone air to breathe, water to drink, and sunshine to grow their food. He does not stop the rain from falling on a person just because they made a mistake. His mercy is infinite and completely free.

How Can We Use This Name in Our Lives?

Learning the names of Allah is not just about memorizing them; it is about living them. Here is how you can use the name Ar-Rahman in your daily life:

1. In Your Prayers (Dua)

When you are feeling lost, scared, or when you have made a big mistake, call upon Ar-Rahman. You can say, "O Ar-Rahman, please cover me in your mercy and forgive me." Because He is the Most Merciful, He loves to forgive those who ask.

2. Be Merciful to Others

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us a beautiful lesson:

"The merciful will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful (Ar-Rahman). Be merciful to those on the earth, and the One in the heavens will have mercy upon you." (Sunan At-Tirmidhi)

If you want the mercy of Ar-Rahman, you must be merciful to the people around you. Forgive your friends when they make a mistake, be kind to your parents, feed hungry animals, and help those who are weak.

Whenever you show kindness, you are acting as a true servant of Ar-Rahman.
