The 99 Names of Allah: Ar-Rahim (The Especially Merciful)

Whenever we begin reciting the Holy Quran, we say the most famous phrase in Islam: Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim (In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful).

In our previous article, we learned that Ar-Rahman means a massive, universal mercy that covers every living thing on Earth. But if Allah is already Ar-Rahman, why do we immediately call Him Ar-Rahim? What is the difference?

Today, we explore the beautiful, personal meaning of the second Name of Allah: Ar-Rahim.

What Does Ar-Rahim Mean?

Just like Ar-Rahman, the name Ar-Rahim comes from the Arabic root word Rahmah, which means deep mercy, compassion, and love.

However, while Ar-Rahman is a general mercy for everyone (even for people who do not believe in God), Ar-Rahim is a very specific, special, and continuous mercy. It is a reward focused directly on the believers—the people who try their best to do good deeds and follow Allah’s path.

Think of it like this: A kind teacher might give free pencils to every student in the school (this is like Ar-Rahman). But if a student studies hard and asks for extra help, the teacher gives them special, one-on-one tutoring and an award (this is like Ar-Rahim).

Allah says in the Quran:

"And He is ever, to the believers, Merciful (Rahim)." (Quran 33:43)

A Mercy in This World and the Next

Another major difference is time. The mercy of Ar-Rahman provides us with air, food, and rain in this temporary world. But the mercy of Ar-Rahim lasts forever.

It is the mercy of Ar-Rahim that will protect the believers on the Day of Judgment. It is the mercy of Ar-Rahim that will forgive our hidden sins and allow us to enter Paradise (Jannah). It is a special, unending love reserved for those who actively seek it.

How Can We Use This Name in Our Lives?

Learning the names of Allah is the best way to improve our daily prayers. Here is how you can connect with the name Ar-Rahim:

1. Ask for Special Forgiveness

We all make mistakes, and sometimes we feel like our sins are too big to be forgiven. But Allah is Ar-Rahim. When you are praying alone, ask Him directly: "O Ar-Rahim, I am trying my best to be a good person, but I have failed. Please show me Your special mercy and forgive my sins." He loves to answer this prayer from a sincere heart.

2. Don't Lose Hope

Because Allah is Ar-Rahim, a believer should never feel hopeless or depressed about the future. Even when life gets very hard and you feel completely alone, remember that the "Especially Merciful" is watching over you. His special mercy is always there to guide you out of the darkness and into the light.
