The 99 Names of Allah: Al-Quddus (The Pure and Holy)

So far, we have learned that Allah is the Most Merciful (Ar-Rahman, Ar-Rahim) and the absolute King of the universe (Al-Malik). But human kings often have flaws. They can be greedy, make bad decisions, or have physical weaknesses.

To prove that Allah is nothing like a human king, the Quran immediately follows Al-Malik with the fourth Beautiful Name of Allah: Al-Quddus.

What Does Al-Quddus Mean?

Al-Quddus translates to "The Absolutely Pure," "The Most Holy," or "The Flawless."

In simple English, it means that Allah is completely free from any imperfection, weakness, or fault. Everything in our universe has some kind of flaw. Cars break down, flowers die, and human beings get tired, sick, and forgetful.

But Al-Quddus is completely perfect. He never sleeps, He never forgets, He never makes a mistake, and He has no evil inside Him. He is completely clean and pure from any negative qualities that we can imagine.

Allah links His kingship and His purity together in the Quran:

"Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth is exalting Allah, the Sovereign (Al-Malik), the Pure (Al-Quddus), the Exalted in Might, the Wise." (Quran 62:1)

The Source of All Purity

Because Allah is Al-Quddus, He is the source of all purity in the world. When the angels look at Allah, they are constantly amazed by His pure perfection. In fact, a famous prayer (Dua) that the angels constantly say, and that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to recite when bowing in prayer, is:

"Subbuhun Quddusun, Rabb-ul-Mala'ikati war-Ruh." (Perfect and Holy is He, Lord of the angels and the Spirit.)

Because He is perfectly pure, the laws He gives us in the Quran are also pure and designed to keep human beings clean from spiritual and physical dirt.

How Can We Use This Name in Our Lives?

Connecting with the name Al-Quddus can beautifully change how we live and pray every day. Here is how:

1. Trust in His Perfect Plan

Because you are human, you are imperfect. You will make mistakes, and sometimes bad things will happen to you. But because Allah is Al-Quddus, you must remember that He never makes a mistake. Even if you don't understand why something difficult is happening in your life, you can trust that Al-Quddus has a pure, perfect, and flawless reason for it. He never acts out of cruelty or accident.

2. Purify Your Heart and Actions

If you love Al-Quddus, you should try to bring purity into your own life. This is why Muslims wash themselves (Wudu) before they pray—to be physically pure before speaking to the Most Pure. But more importantly, we must purify our hearts. We can do this by removing negative thoughts, stopping ourselves from lying or cheating, and treating others with a clean and honest heart.

When you remember that Allah is Al-Quddus, you stop expecting perfection from other humans and start seeking it only from the Creator!
