The 99 Names of Allah: Al-Qahhar (The All-Subduing)

Throughout history, powerful tyrants, corrupt rulers, and oppressive empires have felt invincible. They built massive armies, accumulated vast wealth, and crushed the weak without fear of consequences. Yet, every single one of them eventually fell, crumbled into history, or was destroyed.

Why? Because above every earthly power stands the fifteenth Beautiful Name of Allah: Al-Qahhar.

What Does Al-Qahhar Mean?

Al-Qahhar translates to "The All-Subduing," "The Supreme Prevailer," "The Irresistible Conqueror," or "The Master of All."

The Arabic root Qahara means to dominate, overpower, compel, or subdue completely so that no resistance remains. Al-Qahhar is the One whose power cannot be challenged by any creature. Whether a person believes in Him or not, everyone is completely subject to His laws—no one can escape aging, death, or His ultimate judgment.

The Quran repeatedly pairs Al-Qahhar with Al-Wahid (The One):

"Say: Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the One, the All-Subduing (Al-Qahhar)." (Quran 13:16)

And on the Day of Judgment, Allah will ask all of creation:

"To whom belongs the kingdom this Day? To Allah, the One, the All-Subduing (Al-Qahhar)!" (Quran 40:16)

Hope for the Oppressed

While the name Al-Qahhar strikes fear into the hearts of proud oppressors, it brings immense comfort to those who are weak, mistreated, or helpless.

When you see injustice in the world and feel powerless to stop it, remember Al-Qahhar. No matter how strong a corrupt person seems today, their power is temporary. Al-Qahhar can dismantle their pride in a single second. Justice will always prevail because the Supreme Prevailer is in total command.

1. Subdue Your Own Ego (Nafs)

The greatest enemy you face is often not outside, but inside your own heart—your bad habits, anger, greed, and desires. Use the power of Al-Qahhar to subdue your lower self (Nafs). When you feel tempted to sin or act out in anger, ask Al-Qahhar to help you conquer your negative desires.

2. Never Feel Hopeless Against Oppression

If someone uses their power or influence to hurt you, do not lose heart or fall into despair. Turn your head to the sky and trust Al-Qahhar. Pray for justice, knowing that Allah holds the hearts, lives, and destinies of all people in His hands.

3. Remain Truly Humble

Remembering Al-Qahhar reminds us that all human strength is borrowed. Never let wealth, authority, physical strength, or knowledge make you arrogant. Always remain humble, knowing that we are all small servants before the Supreme Conqueror of the universe.
