The 99 Names of Allah: Al-Muqaddim (The Expediter & Promoter)
Have you ever wondered why certain people advance quickly in life while others wait for years?
Why a young person suddenly receives an unexpected breakthrough, why a nation rises rapidly on the global stage, or why a prayer you made yesterday is answered with breathtaking speed today?
In human society, we talk about "getting ahead," "promotions," and "cutting the line." We assume that getting ahead depends solely on connections, luck, or aggressive self-promotion.
The seventy-first Beautiful Name of Allah — Al-Muqaddim (The Expediter, The Promoter, The One Who Brings Forward, The Advancer) — reveals the true Authority behind all advancement and timing.
Al-Muqaddim is the One who brings forward whatever He wills, elevates whom He wills in status and faith, speeds up events according to His wisdom, and places things at the very front of the line. No one can delay what Al-Muqaddim brings forward!
1. The Linguistic Roots of Al-Muqaddim
Al-Muqaddim (الْمُقَدِّمُ) comes from the Arabic root Q-D-M (ق-د-م), which carries primary meanings of precedence, coming first, advancing, bringing to the front, courage, and ancient precedence.
From this root:
- Qaddama (قَدَّمَ) = He brought forward, he prioritized, he offered in advance
- Taqaddum (تَقَدُّم) = Progress, advancement, moving forward
- Qadam (قَدَم) = Foot / step (that which moves you forward)
- Muqaddimah (مُقَدِّمَة) = Introduction / preface (that which comes first)
- Miqdam (مِقْدَام) = Brave warrior who rushes to the front lines
- Al-Muqaddim = The Supreme Expediter & Promoter — who advances whom He wills in rank, brings events forward in time, and places His righteous servants at the front
2. Al-Muqaddim & Al-Mu'akhkhir: The Timing Pair
In Islamic theology, Al-Muqaddim (The Expediter, #71) is paired with its complementary twin: Al-Mu'akhkhir (The Delayer, #72).
Together, they govern the master clock of the universe:
- Al-Muqaddim brings forward (Taqdim) what belongs in the front.
- Al-Mu'akhkhir delays (Ta'khir) what belongs in the back.
The Divine Order of Precedence:
- In Time: Al-Muqaddim speeds up an event so it happens earlier by His decree.
- In Status: Al-Muqaddim elevates Prophets, scholars, and righteous believers above others in spiritual rank.
- In Value: Al-Muqaddim places the Afterlife (Akhirah) ahead of this temporary world (Dunya).
If Al-Muqaddim advances a person, no human jealousy or opposition can hold them back. And if He delays something, no human rush can force it to happen a second earlier!
3. Al-Muqaddim in the Holy Sunnah
While derived from the Quranic concept of Taqdim, the exact name Al-Muqaddim is explicitly featured in one of the most famous supplications taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
During the Tahajjud (night prayer) and at the end of the Tashahhud before Taslim, the Prophet ﷺ would pray:
"Allahummagh-fir li ma qaddamtu wa ma akhkhartu, wa ma asrartu wa ma a'lantu... Antal-Muqaddimu wa Antal-Mu'akhkhiru, la ilaha illa Ant!" (O Allah, forgive for me what I have sent forward [past deeds] and what I have delayed [future deeds], what I have concealed and what I have declared... You are the Expediter (Al-Muqaddim) and You are the Delayer (Al-Mu'akhkhir), there is no god but You!) (Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)
Notice how the Prophet ﷺ anchored his forgiveness in these two names: He acknowledged that Allah controls what comes first, what comes last, and how our deeds are evaluated.
4. Two Dimensions of Taqdim (Bringing Forward)
A. Spiritual Advancement (Taqdim in Faith)
Why were Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (RA) and Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) elevated to the very top of human status after the Prophets?
Because Al-Muqaddim brought them forward! They rushed to Islam first, gave their wealth first, and sacrificed first.
"And the foremost [in faith] are the foremost [in Jannah] — Those are the ones brought near [to Allah]." (Quran 56:10-11)
As-Sabiqunas-Sabiqun — the foremost! Al-Muqaddim loves when a believer strives to be in the front line of good deeds.
B. Worldly & Timing Advancement (Taqdim in Decrees)
Sometimes you pray for something, and Al-Muqaddim answers it with astonishing speed — a job opens up tomorrow, a healing happens overnight, or an unexpected opportunity arrives out of nowhere.
That rapid timing is Al-Muqaddim advancing your blessing according to His perfect wisdom.
5. Lessons for Every Age
For children: When you run a race, you try to reach the finish line first! Allah Al-Muqaddim loves children who rush to do good things first — like being the first to say Assalamu Alaikum, the first to help clean up, or the first to stand up for prayer!
For teenagers: Don't sit around waiting for your life to change. Be proactive! Al-Muqaddim loves initiative. When you take the first step toward studying, building a skill, or improving your faith, Al-Muqaddim brings your success forward.
For adults: Stop feeling bitter when someone else gets promoted before you. Your promotion is in the hands of Al-Muqaddim. If He has not advanced your worldly status yet, He may be using that time to advance your spiritual rank in Jannah. Trust His timing.
For the elderly: Looking back on life, you can see how Al-Muqaddim positioned you at key moments. The deeds you "sent forward" (ma qaddamtu) — your charity, prayers, and sacrifices — are waiting for you in front of Allah's throne.
6. How to Live with Al-Muqaddim Daily
- Prioritize What Allah Prioritizes: Al-Muqaddim put Salah at the front of your daily schedule. Never delay what Allah brought forward. Put prayer before business, sports, and entertainment.
- Rush to Good Deeds (Sari'u): The Quran commands: "Be foremost in seeking forgiveness from your Lord..." (Quran 57:21). When an opportunity to do good appears, don't hesitate — do it immediately!
- Stand in the First Row (As-Saff Al-Awwal): The Prophet ﷺ said: "If people knew what reward lay in the Adhan and the first row [of prayer], and found no way to get it except by drawing lots, they would draw lots for it!" (Sahih al-Bukhari).
- Make this Prophetic Supplication:
"Allahumma Antal-Muqaddimu wa Antal-Mu'akhkhir, la ilaha illa Ant." (O Allah, You are the Expediter and You are the Delayer, there is no god but You.)
