The 99 Names of Allah: Al-Jabbar (The Restorer of Broken Hearts)

Throughout our lives, we all experience moments where we feel completely shattered. We lose people we love, we fail at our goals, or we are hurt by someone we trusted. When our hearts are deeply broken, no amount of money or human advice can put the pieces back together.

To find true healing, we must call upon the ninth Beautiful Name of Allah: Al-Jabbar.

What Does Al-Jabbar Mean?

Many people misunderstand the name Al-Jabbar. It is often translated as "The Compeller" or "The Forceful One." While this is true—it means Allah can force His will over everything and nobody can stop Him—there is a second, far more beautiful meaning hidden in the Arabic language.

The root word Jabr was traditionally used by Arab doctors to describe the act of setting a broken bone. Therefore, Al-Jabbar literally means "The Restorer," "The Healer," or "The One who fixes what is broken."

Allah is the only one who can take a completely broken heart, a broken family, or a broken life, and perfectly put it back together again, making it even stronger than it was before.

Allah uses this powerful name at the end of Surah Al-Hashr:

"He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection of Peace, the Granter of Security, the Guardian, the Almighty, the Compeller (Al-Jabbar), the Supreme..." (Quran 59:23)

The Defender of the Weak

When we look at both meanings of Al-Jabbar—The Forceful and The Restorer—we see a beautiful picture.

Allah uses His unstoppable force (The Compeller) to protect the weak and punish the cruel people who hurt others. At the exact same time, He uses His gentle healing (The Restorer) to fix the hearts of the innocent people who were broken by that cruelty.

This means that if someone bullies you or harms you, you do not need to take revenge. Al-Jabbar will use His force to deal with the person who hurt you, and He will use His healing to fix your pain.

How Can We Use This Name in Our Lives?

Connecting with Al-Jabbar is the ultimate medicine for sadness and depression. Here is how you can use this name in your daily life:

1. Ask Him to Fix Your Heart

When you are crying, depressed, or feeling completely crushed by a situation, go into prayer and call upon Al-Jabbar. Say, "O Al-Jabbar, my heart is broken and only You can fix it. Please restore my strength and heal my pain." There is a famous prayer (Dua) that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to say between the two prostrations (Sujood) in prayer: "O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, heal me (Wajburni), and provide for me."

2. Help Fix Others

If you want the healing of Al-Jabbar, you should try to be a person who heals others. If you see a friend who is sad, sit with them and listen. If you see someone who is poor, give them charity. Do not be the kind of person who breaks people's hearts with mean words or gossip. Be the person who brings comfort to the broken.
