Human goodness (Birr), at its best, melts the heart. But human goodness is limited — it is often selective, easily exhausted, and restricted by human mood and resources.
The seventy-ninth Beautiful Name of Allah — Al-Barr (The Source of All Goodness, The Benign, The Gracious Benefactor, The One of Unlimited Kindness) — describes the ultimate Origin of all goodness in existence.
Al-Barr is the One whose kindness is boundless, whose generosity is gentle and continuous, whose promises are completely true, and who multiplies the smallest good deed you perform into a mountain of reward. Every act of goodness in the universe is a drop from the ocean of Al-Barr.

The name Al-Barr appears in one of the most heartwarming scenes described in the Quran — the conversation of the believers after they have safely entered Paradise:
"They will say, 'Indeed, we used to caller upon Him before. Indeed, He is the Source of Goodness (Al-Barr), the Especially Merciful (Ar-Rahim).'" (Quran 52:28)

1. He Rewards the Intention (Niyyah)
If a human boss asks you to do a job, you only get paid if you physically finish the work.
Al-Barr handles you with divine gentleness:
- If you intend to do a good deed but cannot finish it, Al-Barr writes down a FULL good deed in your record!
- If you intend to do a bad deed but stop yourself for His sake, Al-Barr writes it down as a GOOD deed!
- If you perform a good deed, Al-Barr multiplies it from 10 to 700 times or more!
This is pure, unadulterated Birr (goodness).
2. He Forgives Sins and Covers Flaws
When you make a mistake and turn back in repentance, Al-Barr does not rub your nose in the past. He erases the sin, shields you from public humiliation, and treats you with gentle kindness.

Al-Barr sends rain, sunlight, food, health, and children to those who obey Him AND to those who deny Him. He does not cut off His basic goodness even from His enemies while they live on Earth.

Since Allah is Al-Barr, He commands believers to embody Birr (active righteousness) in their lives.
What is real Birr? The Quran gives a famous, comprehensive definition in Surah Al-Baqarah:
"Righteousness (Al-Birr) is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask..." For teenagers: In a world where people can be harsh, sarcastic, and mean online, stand out by practicing Birr (active goodness). Be the friend who encourages others, respects teachers, and speaks words of kindness. Al-Barr loves gentle, good hearts.
For adults: Make Birr the culture of your home. Treat your spouse with gentleness, your children with patience, and your aging parents with supreme honor (Birr al-Walidayn). When you reflect Al-Barr's goodness in your family, Allah fills your home with barakah (blessings).
For the elderly: Take comfort in Quran 52:28. The people of Jannah look back on their lives and say: "Indeed, He was Al-Barr, Ar-Rahim." Al-Barr has been good to you through every chapter of your life, and He has prepared an even greater goodness for you in the Afterlife.
6. How to Live with Al-Barr Daily
- Practice Birr al-Walidayn Daily: Call your parents, serve them, speak to them with gentle honor (never say "Uff" to them), and pray for them daily.
- Do Good Without Expecting Return: Embody Birr by helping people anonymously or serving those who cannot pay you back.
- Focus on Good Intentions: Start your day by intending to do 5 good deeds. Even if obstacles stop you, Al-Barr records every single intention as a completed reward!
