The eighty-second Beautiful Name of Allah — Al-Afuww (The Pardoner, The Effacer of Sins, The One Who Erases All Traces of Wrongs) — describes this ultimate level of forgiveness.
While Al-Ghafur (#34) means covering your sin so it isn't exposed, Al-Afuww means completely wiping out the sin, deleting its record from the angels' books, and removing even the memory or consequence of the fault from your soul.
1. The Linguistic Roots of Al-Afuww
Al-Afuww (الْعَفُوُّ) comes from the Arabic root '-F-W (ع-ف-و), which carries three profound meanings: erasing/obliterating, leaving no trace, and giving abundantly beyond expectation.

- 'Afa (عَفَا) = He erased, he wiped out completely, he pardoned
- 'Afw (عَفْو) = Absolute pardon, complete effacement of sins, surplus abundance
- 'Afiya (عَافِيَة) = Complete health, well-being, and protection from harm (restoring body to a state before illness)

The Desert Metaphor of 'Afw:
In ancient Arabia, when a powerful desert wind blew across the sand, completely smoothing out footprints and camel tracks so that no trace of a traveler remained, they said: "Afatis-rihu al-athar" (The wind erased the tracks).
Al-Afuww is the One whose divine pardon blows like a cool breeze over your book of deeds, smoothing out every stain of sin until your record is as clean as fresh, unblemished sand.
2. Al-Ghafur vs. Al-Afuww: What's the Difference?
Islamic scholars (such as Imam Al-Ghazali and Ibn al-Qayyim) explain the beautiful distinction between these two forms of forgiveness:
- Al-Ghafur (الْغَفُورُ - #34): Derived from Gha-fa-ra (to cover/shield). He covers your sin so that other people don't see it, and shields you from its punishment on Judgment Day. But the record of the sin still exists in the book.

The name Al-Afuww appears 5 times in the Quran, almost always paired with Al-Ghafur or Al-Qadir:

"Indeed, Allah is Pardoning (Afuwwan) and Forgiving (Ghafura)." (Quran 4:43, 4:99, 22:60, 58:2)

The most famous connection to Al-Afuww in Islamic history occurred when Aisha (RA), the beloved wife of the Prophet ﷺ, asked him a personal question:
"O Messenger of Allah! If I know which night is Laylat al-Qadr (The Night of Power), what should I pray to Allah during it?"
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ replied: "Say this du'a:
Allahumma innaka 'Afuwwun, tuhibbul-'afwa, fa'fu 'anni! (O Allah! Indeed You are the Supreme Pardoner, You love to pardon, so pardon me!)" (Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Graded Sahih)

Laylat al-Qadr is a night worth more than 1,000 months (83+ years). Out of all the thousands of prayers the Prophet ﷺ could have taught Aisha for this ultimate night — asking for wealth, health, kingdoms, or victory — he taught her to ask Al-Afuww for 'Afw (pardon)!
Why? Because if Al-Afuww erases your past sins, you enter Paradise clean, your du'as are answered, your heart finds peace, and your life is completely renewed.
5. Lessons for Every Age
For children: Have you ever made a pencil drawing and used a soft eraser to wipe away a mistake until the page looks clean and white again? Allah Al-Afuww has the biggest, softest eraser! Whenever you do something wrong and ask Him to forgive you, He erases it so it's gone forever!
For teenagers: Many young people carry heavy guilt over past mistakes, private sins, or bad habits. They feel ruined. Al-Afuww tells you: Your past does not define you. When you ask Al-Afuww for pardon, He erases that chapter completely. Start fresh today with a clean page.
For adults: How do you handle people who wrong you? The Quran says in 4:149 that if you pardon others, Allah will pardon you. Don't just hold onto grudges while claiming to love Allah. Embody 'Afw in your family and workplace — erase people's slips and give them fresh starts.
